Location: The UHEW National Office, Ottawa, Ontario
The Position: The Labour Relations Officer is a bilingual temporary position located at the UHEW National office in Ottawa Ontario. The position is responsible for providing representation services for the Union of Health and Environment Workers.
Duties: The position is responsible for providing wide range of labour relations services to the union membership, Elected Officers and National Council regarding the representation of members’ rights, entitlements and interests with respect to the interpretation and application of collective agreements, labour-related legislation, employer policies, and other Labour Relations, Human Resources and Human Rights issues.
Qualifications: Post-secondary graduate in labour relations, political science, social sciences, law, legislative studies or a related discipline, or equivalent education, training and experience relative to the requirements of the position. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in grievance or adjudication processes, or equivalent relevant experience. Knowledge of the political and operational structures of the UHEW and PSAC and the broader labour movement as well as commitment to union and social justice issues. Ability to analyze, apply, explain, and interpret collective agreements, employment legislation and employer policies and directives. Ability to design union education materials and facilitate union courses according to the principles and practices of popular education. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in one or both official languages (as designated by the position) with workers in a variety of occupations and backgrounds. Strong time management skills to deal effectively with conflicting priorities, meet strict deadlines, fulfill obligations while remaining focused during multiple distractions. Demonstrated strong judgment, problem-solving, conflict resolution, teamwork and leadership skills, often under circumstances that are stressful, politically and personally sensitive. Ability to use computer-based technology including Microsoft, internet, email, and various software applications. High degree of confidentiality, self-motivation, initiative, adaptability and reliability. Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others in a team environment in providing effective union services to the UHEW membership.
Salary and Benefits: Band 11, $96,828 to $108,981 plus $1,500 Bilingualism Allowance.
