Indigenous Disability Awareness Month: Honoring and Supporting Indigenous Peoples with Disabilities

November is Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM) — a time to recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples living with disabilities. Across Canada, the Union of Environment Workers (UHEW) is taking action from coast to coast to coast, representing members in multiple organizations and federal departments to promote inclusion, accessibility, and equity.

As part of this work, UHEW:

  • Raises awareness nationally about the unique challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples living with disabilities.
  • Supports Indigenous-led programs and initiatives that focus on accessibility, inclusion, and cultural respect.
  • Encourages members to recognize contributions of Indigenous employees, colleagues, and community leaders living with disabilities.
  • Promotes accessible and inclusive workplaces across all departments where our members work.
  • Shares resources and best practices to help all members foster understanding, allyship, and meaningful action.

IDAM is more than recognition — it is a call to action. By celebrating contributions, removing barriers, and learning from Indigenous perspectives, UHEW members help build stronger workplaces and a more inclusive public service.
