The Union of Health and Environment Workers (UHEW) believes that everyone has the right to achieve his/her goals through education and hard work. In a world where technology and society are changing at a rapid pace, education is critical to remaining on top of issues and building a better future. With this in mind, UHEW is pleased to offer five scholarships:
- Two scholarships are awarded on scholastic achievement for $3,000 each and named the Tony Tilley Scholastic Award and the Mary Stewart Scholastic Award;
- One scholarship in the amount of $3,000 for a candidate entering into an apprenticeship program;
- One scholarship in the amount of $3,000 is awarded to a member returning to school on a full-time basis to further his or her education; and
- One Human Rights scholarship in the amount of $3,000 for a candidate struggling with a disability while striving for a higher education.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS GUIDELINES
APPLICATIONS
Applications for the scholarships are invited annually by means of a notice issued by the UHEW. Application forms for the scholarships, offered to qualified dependents and/or members of the UHEW membership, can also be obtained on request from your Local or Sub-Local President or on our Website.
ELIGIBILITY
SCHOLASTIC SCHOLARSHIPS: THE TONY TILLEY SCHOLARSHIP AND THE MARY STEWART SCHOLARSHIP
- These scholarships are offered to dependents of UHEW members in good standing as of August 21st of the calendar year, who intend to attend a university of recognized standing or a recognized institute of higher learning for any academic year on a full-time basis.
- Submit a full transcript of your grades from your most recent academic year (i.e. high school or last year of post-secondary studies, as applicable).
- The successful applicant will be required to submit proof of registration and acceptance at a university or recognized institute of higher learning.
- A statement of proposed budget.
- A statement pertaining to your education and career plans.
- A 500-word essay on the UHEW selected topic will be used as part of the selection process.
APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP
- This scholarship is offered to dependents of UHEW members in good standing as of August 21st of the calendar year, who intend to enter into an apprenticeship program at a recognized institute on a full-time basis.
- Submit a full transcript of your grades from your most recent academic year (i.e. high school or last year of post-secondary studies, as applicable).
- The successful applicant will be required to submit proof of registration and acceptance at a recognized apprenticeship institute.
- A statement of proposed budget.
- A statement pertaining to your apprenticeship program and career plans.
- A 500-word essay on the UHEW selected topic will be used as part of the selection process.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR MEMBER RETURNING TO SCHOOL ON A FULL-TIME BASIS
- This scholarship is offered to a UHEW member in good standing returning to a university or a recognized institute of higher learning on a full-time basis to continue their education.
- The successful applicant will be required to submit proof of registration and acceptance at a university or recognized institute of higher learning.
- A statement of proposed budget.
- A statement pertaining to your College Program and career plans.
- A 500-word essay on the UHEW selected topic will be used as part of the selection process.
HUMAN RIGHTS SCHOLARSHIP
- This scholarship is offered to dependents of UHEW members in good standing as of August 21st of the calendar year, who intend to attend a university of recognized standing or a recognized institute of higher learning for any academic year on a full-time basis.
