The Union of Health and Environment Workers believes that everyone has the right to achieve his/her goals through education and hard work. UHEW offers five scholarships annually, each in the amount of $3,000, to qualified dependents and/or members of the UHEW membership:
- Two scholarships are awarded on scholastic achievement named the Tony Tilley Scholastic Award and the Mary Stewart Scholastic Award;
- One scholarship is awarded to a candidate entering into an apprenticeship program;
- One scholarship is awarded to a member returning to school on a full-time basis to further his or her education; and
- One Human Rights scholarship.
The 2024 Scholarship was awarded based on the merits of a maximum of a 500-word essay. The topic for the essay was:
Assess the complexities that labor unions are currently encountering in navigating the landscape of remote and/or hybrid work environments. How is the new hybrid work environment, affecting solidarity principles within the union? What considerations should the union be advocating for while we adapt to the new hybrid work environments, and the challenges we face cultivating cohesion and teamwork among geographically dispersed members.
UHEW National Council has awarded scholarships to the following candidates:
- Tony Tilley Award – Gabriel Blanchard
- Mary Stewart Award – Joshua Sooley
- Human Rights Award – Alexander MacIsaac-Brayall
- Member Returning to Full-Time Studies Award – Geneviève Sylvain
UHEW is very proud of each of the recipients’ goals and wishes them well as they proceed with their education and meeting those goals. Congratulations to all!
