The Union of Health and Environment Workers believes that everyone has the right to achieve his/her goals through education and hard work. UHEW offers five scholarships annually, each in the amount of $3,000, to qualified dependents and/or members of the UHEW membership:
- Two scholarships are awarded on scholastic achievement named the Tony Tilley Scholastic Award and the Mary Stewart Scholastic Award;
- One scholarship is awarded to a candidate entering into an apprenticeship program;
- One scholarship is awarded to a member returning to school on a full-time basis to further his or her education; and
- One Human Rights scholarship.
The 2023 Scholarship was awarded based on the merits of a maximum of a 500-word essay. The topic for the essay was:
The union is a group of employees working together to improve working conditions and uphold the Collective agreement. The recent strike has introduced many members to their union and provided a new level of union engagement.
- Identify ways the Union can best build on this engagement with members to add strength and solidarity in the labour movement. How can members continue to support and get involved in the labour movement? Identify the barriers to member engagement and how to overcome these challenges. What role do young workers have in the union movement? How can the union improve to encourage and embrace inclusion of young members?
UHEW National Council has awarded scholarships to the following candidates:
- Tony Tilley Scholastic Award – Jeremy Janella
- Mary Stewart Scholastic Award – Parsa Norouzian
- Human Rights Scholastic Award – Emily Grace George
