The UHEW National Convention is the union’s supreme governing body. It takes place every three years and is the highlight of the democratic process within the union. The Convention is the forum where members vote to adopt policies that direct how the Union will spend its money and what priorities it should pursue until the next convention. Convention delegates also elect the National President, the National Vice-President and all members of the UHEW National Council.
The next UHEW National Convention will be held virtually August 16-21, 2021. It will bring together delegates from UHEW Locals from all across the country who will debate resolutions that are being submitted by members in these Locals and from the UHEW National Council.
This year’s Convention was originally scheduled to take place in 2020, but like almost everything else in the last year, it got postponed until now.
Some important deadlines as we head towards Convention include:
- Deadline for receipt of Convention participants’ name: April 18, 2021
- Deadline for receipt of resolutions: April 25, 2021
- Deadline for online registration for delegates: May 16, 2021
- Deadline for online registration for observers: May 31, 2021
- For more information about any of these deadlines please contact your Local Executive.
Once resolutions are received, UHEW will establish Convention Committees to go through batches of resolutions on common issues like Finances or changes to the UHEW By-Laws. Convention Committees will meet virtually May 31-June 3, 2021 to review all these resolutions and to make recommendations which will be forwarded to the full Convention for their consideration. More to come later on Convention Committees.
We hope that despite our physical distance from each other we can create a spirit at this year’s Convention that will mirror the in-person events of the past. There will still be vigorous debate and discussion on the important issues facing our members and our Union. But we also hope to have some social interaction and maybe even some virtual fun. Stay tuned and tuned in for more information about your National Convention.
