Pride Month 2026: Visibility, Solidarity and Action

June marks Pride Month across Canada and around the world — a time to celebrate the strength, diversity, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, while also recognizing the ongoing work still needed to achieve true equality, safety, and inclusion.

For many members, Pride is both a celebration and a reminder. It reflects decades of activism, organizing, and collective action by people who pushed for dignity, human rights protections, safer workplaces, equitable healthcare, and the right to live openly and authentically.

As union members and public service workers, we understand that inclusion does not happen automatically. Progress is built through solidarity, education, advocacy, and the willingness to stand up against discrimination whenever it appears.

Across Canada and internationally, we continue to see growing attacks targeting trans and gender-diverse people, attempts to roll back protections, and increasing hate directed at 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Pride Month is an opportunity not only to celebrate, but to reaffirm our commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring our workplaces and communities remain safe and welcoming for everyone.

Our Local recognizes that representation matters. Inclusive workplaces are stronger workplaces. When members feel respected, supported, and able to be themselves, our union and our communities benefit.

Throughout Pride Month, we encourage members to:

  • Learn more about the history of Pride and the labour movement’s role in advancing equality rights
  • Support local Pride events and community initiatives
  • Speak out against discrimination, harassment, and hate
  • Continue building inclusive spaces within our workplaces and union structures
  • Support trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse members and communities

Pride did not begin as a celebration sponsored by institutions. It began as protest, resistance, and collective action demanding change. That history remains important today.

Our Local remains committed to equity, inclusion, respect, and solidarity for all members. We recognize the important work of activists, union members, community organizations, and allies who continue pushing for meaningful progress and safer spaces for everyone.

To all members celebrating Pride Month: we see you, we support you, and we stand with you.

Happy Pride Month from the UHEW National Human Rights Representative
